Peb Fort, or Vikatgad, is a hill fort located at an altitude of approximately 2,050 feet (640 meters) above sea level. The name "Vikatgad" derives from Vikat, meaning "difficult" in Marathi—a reference to the steep terrain and the strategic challenge it posed to invaders in historic times.
The fort was historically used as a granary and a military watchtower by Maratha rulers, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, to oversee the surrounding hill forts such as Chanderi, Malanggad, Nakhind, and Matheran. Even today, the fort’s location offers breathtaking 360° views of the entire Matheran range, especially on clear days.
